Orwell Special Prize ad Andrei Kurkov!

Giovedì 25 giugno si è tenuta allo University College di Londra la cerimonia di assegnazione dei Premi Orwell 2026, riconoscimenti che promuovono una scrittura e una riflessione di qualità in ambito politico, selezionando le opere che, come quelle di George Orwell, puntano a "trasformare la scrittura politica in un’arte".

Con molto piacere vi annunciamo che l'Orwell Special Prize, conferito solo 8 volte dal 1977, è stato vinto dal nostro scrittore ucraino Andrei KURKOV, pubblicato in Italia da Keller e Marsilio. Per la sua prosa sobria e lineare, attraversata da un umorismo nero e da un realismo lievemente surreale, Kurkov è spesso paragonato a Murakami, Kafka, Bulgakov e Vonnegut. E ora anche a Orwell, per la sua straordinaria capacità di intrecciare la dimensione politica al racconto del quotidiano.

Al momento della premiazione, l'autore ha dichiarato di essersi sempre sentito vicino al grande scrittore britannico, di cui lesse i libri in traduzioni clandestine, visto che nell'Unione Sovietica erano proibiti. Si riconosce anzitutto nella familiarità delle situazioni in cui lui stesso si è trovato, ma anche, inaspettatamente, "nei pensieri e nel modo di guardare la realtà, plasmati dalla sua influenza".

Dalla motivazione della giuria: "Tonight, we are honoured to have with us the greatest living writer of his nation. As Orwell did, he writes across fiction, non-fiction and journalism. Readers across the world marvel at the beauty of his storytelling and the horrors of the war he describes. Today, people going about their daily lives in Sudan, Gaza, Myanmar and many more besides – are sadly familiar with the realities of war. And so too, of course, are our European neighbours in Ukraine. Nobody has documented their daily struggle – and the resilience, humour and togetherness emerging from it – as well as Andrey Kurkov. Alongside his diaries and essays, his novels –  from the brilliant Death and the Penguin to his recent trilogy set in pre-Revolutionary Kyiv – constitute one of the finest bodies of work in contemporary literature. Orwell’s warnings against the dangers of totalitarianism and war read today as though they were written yesterday. Similarly, we believe Andrey’s books and journalism will endure.”
